Playsets are fun! The best ones are the ones that engage your imagination and let you create tons of action. For wrestling figures, you don't usually get much variation. WWE Playsets mostly consist of a ring with match-specific accessories but I recently found a new type of match, one that I've never seen before. A sick, demented structure known simply as the Colossal Crashdown Arena!
This is one of the newest FlexForce playsets and it's hard to miss since it's one of the largest boxes to date. Inside, there are lots of pieces, requiring the most assembly needed for a WWE playset so far!
Once assembled, you have a futuristic 18" tall structure of doom! Ever notice those side slots on the Basic rings? Well, this is the first time I see something attached to it as the main structure pieces are anchored there.
The structure serves as a unique type of scaffolding for suspending a coveted prize, so it's very similar to a Money in the Bank or regular Ladder match setup. However, this new structure design has several action features that sets it apart from normal scaffolding.
At the top is a round platform. It's basically a circular ring covered with three break-away chain-link panels. The platform also has some hanging monitor screens built-in.
I didn't attach any of the stickers because I'm planning on customizing my own. You pretty much get the standard stickers, though: A Raw logo for the apron, WWE logo for the center of the ring, 12 WWE logos for the turnbuckles, and 2 stickers for the monitors.
The main accessories that come with this set are two FlexForce launching pads. These are the same ones that come with the FlexForce figures and other playsets. The launching pads can be attached to eight different points; The four corner ring posts, two action points on the structure's arms, and two points on the front and back of the upper platform. This allows you to swing and toss figures all over the place. For added variation, the left action point along the structure also slides up and down.
The only other accessory included is the WWE Championship to suspend from the top of the structure. This belt is the same one as the ones that come with the FlexForce 2-packs. This version of the WWE Championship is a solid rubber piece with the plates painted gold. The plates are molded into the straps, instead of being separate plastic pieces, and have a faux stitching along the edges. I like the look of this belt and wish the regular belts also had this type of stitching along the straps.
So how exactly does the Colossal Crashdown Arena work?
Well, the brutality is pretty straight-forward. First, launch your figures up onto the top platform until one of them breaks through the floor panels. Not only will it end your Superstar's career but it will also expose a red trigger button at the top!
Next, launch more victims into the opening until you hit the trigger and cause the whole structure to collapse onto the ring, crushing everyone inside, and allowing whoever is still moving to grab the belt!
Or...Just have anyone who's 7' tall reach up and grab the belt, but that's not as spectacular!
Overall, this is a pretty cool playset! It's an innovative new design that has lots of play value and is perfect for kids. It reminds me of those old playsets that I enjoyed as a kid with all the neat action features and traps. This is also the deadliest type of match I've ever seen! Think about it: You have to climb this 20' steel structure, smash someone through the top, hit the trigger to make this 2 ton monstrosity & you come crashing down to the ring, so you can finally grab the belt. Just because nobody provided a ladder?! It's horrific enough that you can practically hear the theme from Platoon playing in the background!
It's not right and is extremely dangerous...So I'm saving it for one of my PPV matches!
If you want something different for your setup, the Colossal Crashdown Arena is a good deal. Fortunately, this is not a store-exclusive playset and I've seen it available almost everywhere. I recommend getting it at Target or Walmart, though. They have the best price at around $42, which is $10 cheaper than
